To be or not to be… Martial Artist or Martial Sportsman
Practicing different martial arts, I discovered that there is a big difference between being a martial artist and an athlete martial. Talking with teachers and masters of different arts I could see that many fear is right for the championships. And why this fear?
When you learn a martial art the way it was created, say, with the initial purpose of it, you realize that there are no rules in a real fight. There is one, indeed, survival. That does not mean that we should learn to “hit it on hand” but in others there is a why for art to be trained in this manner, there is a whole philosophy behind the movement and the combat itself.
When you practice a sport and train for a championship, their only goal is to win. Then there is a lot of resemblance to the traditional warrior arts, but in the case of the martial art, you mutilate the knowledge to fit within the standards and rules of a competition. Important pieces of knowledge need to be set aside for the competition is healthy and nobody gets crippled. But maybe, just those parts the martial art he sought to teach something to those who study and practice.
Personally, I highly respect athletes of any sport and I think people are that cause the body to the limit. So I am in no way demeaning those who train martial arts championship. What I mean is that most of them, the oriental arts, have developed a personal and spiritual growth and ultimately end up becoming a battle of egos. Who’s better than who?
I train martial arts to understand mainly the word art. I try to understand my body, my mind and spirit to fight through knowledge that each can pass me. And so, personally, do not really like coaching styles toward championships, despite knowing that a lot (most even) within them is helpful in my martial training.
It is a matter of choice: be a martial artist or martial sportsman? Possibly there is some way to be both, but I, in my humble view, I can not see how. All teachers and professors from various martial arts that I’ve met say that there is a specific training for those who will compete at all competitions to engage requires total focus on rules and patterns of them. Where strike to score more, as a tip to end combat, and so on, depending on the style of each one.
If training is not the same, the result of it probably will not. Focus on being better than the opponents, to reach the first place. In a class “normal”, these were not key areas but improve yourself every day.
All this also depends on the specific style of martial art, and I do not know all. In addition, there are still those championships directed only to shapes, bearings, self defense techniques, etc., many of these directly involve art, since they aim for perfection of the movements of the participant.
Anyway, this post meant to express a little of what I’ve seen and the ideas that arise in the head. These are things that directly affect my training and my choices. And, well, my choice is art.
